"The Piano" synopsis

In the mid-19th century, Ada and her daughter Flora travel from Scotland to New Zealand to marry someone they have never met before. Accompanying them on this harsh voyage was a piano. For Ada, who decided at the age of six that she would never speak, the piano was the tool she needed to express her feelings.

Seven of the eight Academy Award nominations went to women.

At the 93rd Academy Awards in 2021, Chloé Zhao for " Nomadland " became the second woman to win the Best Director award. I was shocked to learn that she was only the second female director in the 93rd film, but Kathryn Bigelow, who directed The Hurt Locker (2008) in the 82nd film, was the first female director to make history. But before that, there was someone else who deserved the award. This is Jane Campion.

In the history of the Academy Awards, she is the second woman to be nominated for Best Director (the first was Lina Wertmuller in 1976 for ``Seven Beauties''). Moreover, Campion was the first female director to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for ``The Piano'' (1993). There was a possibility that it would have continued to win an Oscar, but in the same year, a powerful work called `` Schindler's List '' (1993) appeared. It was a long-awaited masterpiece for Steven Spielberg, who had continued to produce epoch-making works but had never won an Oscar, and because the story was Hollywood's favorite, the history of Jewish persecution, Campion's Her dream of becoming the first female director to win an Oscar was ended.

“The Piano” preview

Although it missed out on Best Picture and Best Director, it's worth noting that out of the eight Academy Awards for which The Piano was nominated, seven were directed to women. This is revolutionary even when looking back at the history of the Academy Awards up to the present day. The only male nominee was Stuart Dryburgh for Best Cinematography. It was overturning gender inequality in the 1990s.

``The Piano'' revolves around the intense love story of Ada, who is attracted to Baines, a man who has assimilated with the natives, even though she has a husband who has taken her in. As the original title suggests, Ada's piano lessons with Baines deepen their love and desire, and many people may remember this work along with Michael Nyman 's music. The job came to Nyman as a result of another composer who had been originally offered to do it withdrawing from the project, but ``The Piano'' became a world-renowned composer who had previously composed film music for works by Peter Greenaway and Patrice Lecomte. It can be said that he became a major composer. Nyman's song ``The Piano'' has since been used in Toyota commercials in Japan as well.
