“The Beguiled” Synopsis

The year is 1864. In the forests of Virginia, where beautiful The Birds reverberates, the sound of cannon fire can be heard from afar, casting a dark shadow over the Civil War, which has entered its third year. Amy (Oona Laurence), a student at a boarding school for girls, discovers a wounded Union soldier, McBurney (Colin Farrell), while out mushroom-picking. She decides to bring him back to the school for treatment. Martha Farnsworth School for Girls is home to five students: principal Martha (Nicole Kidman), teacher Edwina (Kirsten Dunst), Amy, who is unable to return home due to circumstances, Alicia (Elle Fanning), Jane (Angourie Rice), Emily (Emma Howard), and Marie (Addison Riecke). Although she is initially confused by the uninvited appearance of enemy soldiers, she follows the teachings of Christianity and takes care of Amy until she recovers.

The maidens who lived in a school where boys are not allowed are intrigued by the wild and handsome McBunny. Precocious Alicia casts suggestive glances, Edwina secretly dresses up with a brooch, and Marie, who is still young, also dresses up with Edwina's pearl earrings. Martha, the nursery school director, praises the girls, but she can't help but feel excited when she touches a real man's body for the first time in a long while to treat her. McBunny, who is well cared for, wins the trust of his sincere demeanor and ends up being well-received by all seven members. However, his attitude of being affectionate toward everyone and enjoying having women fall in love with him gradually throws the group's orderly gears out of whack.

It all started with an encounter with “An Abnormal Night with White Skin”

The Beguiled is the latest film that won Sofia Coppola the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Since she never participates in filmmaking in the "director-for-hire" style, her first impressions with the deeply moving subject were important for this film as well. However, she never imagined that it would come from a movie starring Clint Eastwood.

It was around the time of the production of " Somewhere ". Sofia was recommended the Eastwood-starring film " The Night Before Christmas " (1971) by production designer Ann Roth and other old friends, who said, "I'm sure you'll like it." She had heard the title of the film for a long time, but had never had a chance to see it. After actually watching it, Sofia was drawn to the film's tense, strange atmosphere, the unexpected developments that soon follow, and above all, the drama of a man being the only man in a world full of women.

However, she had no idea that she wanted to remake this movie. Rather, what caught her eye was its source. Is it possible to go back to the original novel written by Thomas Cullinan, delve deeper into this story from a female perspective, and reinterpret it? If you do that, you'll definitely be able to create works that are uniquely your own. After much thought, a "second version" based on the same original work was created in the history of film.
