Inherent Vice: A '70s California Hidden Figures of intrigue and corruption
2021.06.29
Neil Young, Alex Cox, Jim Abrahams
Visually, I used Journey Through the Past (1974) as a reference. This film is singer -songwriter Neil Young 's directorial debut under the name Bernard Shakey. It's filled with what Paul Thomas Anderson calls ``the heavenly images of an ideal Saturday afternoon,'' and the backlit shots of the sun are echoed in ``Inherent Vice.'' Joaquin Phoenix's character, Doc, is probably inspired by Neil Young in this movie.
I used director Alex Cox's debut film `` Repo Man '' (1984) as a reference for the dialogue. The endless dialogue plays have an offbeat feel similar to Quentin Tarantino. Surprisingly, Paul Thomas Anderson also cited the TV drama ` `The Flying Cop '' (1982) as an influence. This is a nonsense comedy that became the basis for `` The Man with the Naked Gun '' (1988). The screenplay was written by Jim Abrahams, who is known for films such as `` Flying High '' (1980) and ` `Hot Shots '' (1991). Anderson was shocked by the absurd and vague worldview.

``I felt like I could do whatever I wanted, because even if I just took the opening scene, the title would be wrong, and a dead person would appear as a guest. It's really crazy and fresh.'' I felt free to do whatever I wanted. It was a moment of freedom.'' (quoted from Eureka, May 2015 issue, special feature on Paul Thomas Anderson)
The spirit of ``I can do whatever I want'' greatly supported the creation of my work.
