It's scary not knowing the ``heart'' of the creators of ``The Lighthouse.'' A powerful monster that preys on the audience

The unmistakable premise of "I can't fully understand"
When watching The Lighthouse, whether it be the look, the content, or even the aforementioned abnormal attention to detail in the visuals and sound, one may want to ask, "Why did they decide to make this kind of story in this format?" However, at this point, the gap between the audience and the filmmaker is probably already decisive. To put it bluntly, even if we dig deeper, we won't arrive at the answer we want.
Because for director Eggers (and others), creating such a story is inevitable, natural, and self-evident. If we don't keep this in mind while watching the film, we might get lost like a small boat wandering through a pitch-black ocean where the light of the lighthouse doesn't reach. Director Eggers' answer to the question "Why did you make this scene?" is clear, but it is quite difficult to understand the root of it. In every aspect of this film, there is a unique sense of disconnection, where the "inevitability" of the creators is difficult to synchronize with the audience. In other words, perhaps the essence of this film lies in the "incomprehensible" parts. That is why it is interesting, and therefore it can be said to be a "crazy" film.
If we make a very rough distinction between commercial films and art films, which are "films directed at others" and "films directed at oneself" (not all films fall into this category, of course), "The Lighthouse" is definitely the latter. " The Witch " still contained a lot of entertainment elements, but this film has almost no entertainment elements. Even though A24 had the reins, this is the type of film where the filmmaker "did whatever he wanted."

In other words, if you want to know the "why" of this movie, it's quicker to dive into the creator himself. That's why I introduced Director Eggers' tastes, albeit only partially, at the beginning. His roots are in horror movies, his soul is in the past, and perhaps he has a strong interest in stories that have a certain mythical quality... In this way, without some profiling, you won't be able to compete with this strange work.
For example, we have all had the experience of visiting an art museum, standing in front of a work of art, gazing at it for a while, and then tilting our heads to one side, wondering, "How did this come about? What was the creator thinking?" The shock we felt after watching "The Lighthouse" was probably similar to that.
Somewhere, or perhaps even everywhere, a black hole that "normal people will never understand" stands there with its mouth open, and if you step into that area without thinking, you will find yourself in a state of "gazing into the abyss and being stared back at." Just like the two lighthouse keepers, you will probably go mad. In other words, if you do not view it with the premise that "it will never be completely understood," you will become prey to its ferocity, like a mermaid eating a sailor, and will be absorbed in an instant.
