The Talented Mr. Ripley= Replay

Tom The Talented Mr. Ripley, who has no real identity, tries to recreate his life by taking on another personality called Philip. It is no coincidence that the spelling of Ripley is very similar to the word "replay." At least for me, this work is a story of the desire to transform, of the poor wanting to metamorphose into the rich.

The scene where The Talented Mr. Ripley practices the Signs"Greenleaf" is impressive, and it can be said that this is a straightforward depiction of the desire for transformation. In Highsmith's novel, this scene is summed up in one sentence, but in the movie, it is depicted in detail over about 20 shots.

There is an interesting interview article in which director Rene Clement said that Alain Delon was supposed to play Philippe and Maurice Ronet was supposed to play The Talented Mr. Ripley.

"Alain Delon was not yet a star at that time, and he had not yet seduced producers. When the role of Philippe became available, Georges Baum, Alain Delon's agent, contacted me. I went to see Michel Boisron's " The Handmaiden, Be Gentle! " (59). To be honest, Alain Delon was not very prominent in this work. But in a way, there was something intriguing about it. Georges Baum came to see me with Alain Delon. Georges came up with the idea of swapping the roles of Maurice Ronet and Alain Delon and adjusting it to suit the two actors. It was decided that Maurice Ronet would play the role of Philippe and Alain Delon would play the role of The Talented Mr. Ripley. (Quoted from an interview with Rene Clement )

In the film, The Talented Mr. Ripley switches to the personality of Philip, and the roles of The Talented Mr. Ripley and Philip were also switched in casting.
