The first half is a spy drama, the second half is an aerial battle.

Mitchell Gant, played by Eastwood, is called in. Gant is a hero of the Vietnam War and an excellent pilot, but he is emotionally scarred and can easily become distracted. Despite his weaknesses, he also received flight training for the MiG-25 in a top-secret unit of the US Air Force, so it seems unlikely that anyone other than him would be the right man for this mission. The order is to seize a MiG-31. There are two MiG-31s at a factory in Villiersk, Soviet Union. The plan is to successfully seize one of them. His accomplices include Soviet scientists who were involved in the design of the MiG-31 and a Jewish anti-government group.

The first half of the film is about Gant disguised as an export agent, who sneaks into Moscow, evades the clutches of the KGB (Committee for State Security of the Soviet Union), infiltrates the base, and successfully seizes the aircraft. This is a spy drama reminiscent of James Bond, and is quite enjoyable. The Vienna subway is likened to Moscow, and depicts a chase action with the Soviet KGB, but the atmosphere changes completely in the second half, transforming into an aerial spectacle with a maximum speed of Mach 6.

The second half of the film depicts Gant taking off with the MiG-31 from the factory in Biliarsk, slipping through the Soviet anti-aircraft defenses, and finally returning to the United States. Along the way, the film thrillingly depicts the very last line of the fuel running out, and the unpredictable story of how they will refuel in enemy territory keeps you on the edge of your seat. They somehow manage to refuel, but a one-on-one battle between the MiG-31s awaits them.

Firefox No. 2 gives chase to Gant, not wanting him to escape. The two state-of-the-art planes compete in a fierce aerial battle at Mach speed, filling the entire screen. Here, the work of John Dykstra and others really shines, and you can enjoy the fantastic special effects that are the true essence of entertainment movies. There are many movies that depict the negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, but I feel that there are few Cold War movies as unique as this one, and I'm a little curious to see what would happen if it were remade using modern film technology.
