A shocking work that radicalizes the madness of "Vertigo" (58)

Director Paul Verhoeven, who was on the rise at the time with successive hit films such as RoboCop (1987) and Total Recall (1990), chose "Basic Instinct" (1992) as his next film. Ta.

This work is said to have started the subgenre of ``erotic suspense'' that became popular, and it was the result of the impact of the topic of ``the genitals of the leading actress being visible.'' Perhaps because such gossip preceded it, I don't get the impression that ``Basic Instinct'' has been given a fair review, but when I look back on it now, 30 years after its release, I can see that it is a masterpiece that shows director Verhoeven's enthusiasm.

Verhoeven has said that he based this film on Basic Instinct's ` `Vertigo ' ' (1958). ).

"Basic Instinct" preview

`` Vertigo '' is a psychological suspense film in which a former detective played by James Stewart is haunted by the memory of a woman (Kim Novak) who died in an accident, causing him to lose his mental balance. Verhoeven's aim was to update the story of a man who falls into madness at the mercy of a femme fatale to make it more modern and radical.

``Basic Instinct'' begins with the murder of a former rock star with an ice pick during sex. Novelist Catherine (Sharon Stone) is marked by the police as a suspect. With her devilish mind, she mocks the police and seduces detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas), leading her to a horrifying end.

``Personally, I interpreted Catherine as a demon. In a sense, she has supernatural powers and can read people's inner thoughts better than anyone else,'' Verhoeven said. Therefore, the femme fatale Catherine in this film must be the perfect evil woman that no one has ever seen before. What was important was how to express it as a video.
