The results of the 4K restoration even surprised the director himself.

The sci-fi action thriller "Total Recall", which represents the career of superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has led the action movie industry as a "muscular superman", will be released in 2020 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its theatrical release in 1990. It was digitally remastered in 4K in 2017.

In recent years, Studio Canal, which owns the rights to Carolco's works, has been actively converting its library to 4K, and has achieved a track record of theatrical release in Japan. ``Total Recall'' is one such film, which was digitally scanned in 4K from the original 35mm negative and carefully restored. In the case of this work in particular, the video release rights and broadcast rights were under different jurisdictions, so the broadcast master, which was not in very good condition, was reused on the market for a long time. Therefore, being able to see it on a big screen in better condition than when it was first released has value for many people, not just fans of this movie.

“Total Recall” preview

This restoration was led by French video production company Hiventi. The film, which was converted into 4K data in 16-bit tiff format , underwent color grading (tonal correction) and full-scale restoration under the supervision of director Paul Verhoeven. At the same time, the sound has been restored, and the original soundtrack composed by film music giant Jerry Goldsmith has been revived with even better sound quality.

In addition, in this 4K digitally remastered version, you can see a newly shot interview with director Verhoeven in the introduction. The director praises the new version, saying, "It's wonderful. There's so much detail that you could almost call it three-dimensional." He seems to be enjoying himself. This is a work for the director who moved from the Netherlands to Hollywood, and after the success of `` RoboCop '' (1987), he took on the challenge of taking on a bigger stage, so he is no doubt very moved by this arrangement to celebrate his anniversary.

Above all, when speaking of "Total Recall," an increasing number of generations now point to the 2012 remake of the same name directed by Len Wiseman and starring Colin Farrell, so this is a good opportunity to remind them of the existence of the 1990 version. It can be said. Of course, the 2012 version has its own value, but the influence the original had on it is tremendous. By properly understanding the role of classics as classics and revisiting their origins, it will help foster a deeper understanding of both old and new works.
