expulsion from cannes

Lars von Trier is known as the ``genuine Komatta-chan'', not just the ``sacred Kamatte-chan'' of the movie world. He "did it" on May 18, 2011, at the Cannes Film Festival press conference. Ahead of the official screening of her new film Melancholia(2011), Trier held a 40-minute press conference with cast members including Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, John Hurt, and Udo Kier.

Finally, the British newspaper The Times asks him about his German roots. In fact, Trier had learned from his mother's will that he had no genetic connection to Ingel, whom he had previously believed to be his father, and that a German named Fritz Michael Hartmann was his biological father.

For Lars von Trier, this confession must have been an event that shook his identity. When asked about this at a press conference, he suddenly calls himself a Nazi and makes an explosive statement that he sympathizes with Hitler.

"For a long time I thought I was Jewish and was happy with that, but later I learned that I wasn't. My father was German, so I was really a Nazi. It turns out that Hitler did make some mistakes, but I think I understand him...Okay, I'm a Nazi.'' (*1)

Immediately after this pro-Nazi remark, laughter leaked out from the press conference. The performers who were present were also smiling. Except for one person, Kirsten Dunst, who was standing by her side with a hard expression on her face. She quickly realized the seriousness of the situation and tried to prevent Trier from ``self-destructing'', but everything was just a matter of hindsight.

"There were a lot of people sitting there. Stellan Skarsgård, John Hurt, Charlotte Gainsbourg. But no one said anything. No one tried to help. I was the only one standing by Lars and trying to stop him. "(*2)

Although Trier defended the film as a joke, Cannes declared him a persona non grata. The heavy penalty of expulsion from the film festival will be imposed. ``Melancholia'' has become a dark past for Trier, but I still love this movie. To be honest, I'm not a good audience for Trier, but this work is in a class of its own. I think it's the most arrogant, the most selfish, and the most painful work in his filmography.
