It's not just a horror movie

Young people come to the Texas countryside to shoot a pornographic movie. An elderly couple lived at the ranch they chose as the filming location. In fact, they were the oldest murderers in history... When I read just the setting of ``X'', I feel a little worried that it might be a mediocre slasher movie that clearly borrows the setup from `` The Texas Chain Saw Massacre '' (1974). However, if you watch the work, you will quickly realize that those fears are unfounded.

This work, which skillfully mixes predetermined harmony and unpredictability, is like a roller coaster ride through darkness. What kind of scenery awaits you when you reach your destination? The audience sprints toward the end on a track that is a mixture of anxiety and expectations. The factors that provide such a rare sensation are its skillful composition, direction, and surprising cast.

The tone of this work changes drastically between the first half and the second half. The first half carefully creates a disturbing atmosphere with a quiet touch, interspersing quotes from past horror classics. Influenced by Tobe Hooper's classic slasher films such as `` The Devil's Sacrifice ' ' and ` `The Devil's Swamp'' (1977), as well as occultic works such as ``The Devil's Den '' (1974) and ``Rotating'' (1961). Feel. What they all have in common is that they are all movies made before the 1970s. Director Ty West said this in an interview with this author.

``I love horror movies from the 70s, but I'm a fan of all genres of American movies from that time, not just horror. That's why I was conscious of the tone of 70's American movies throughout. I also love filmmaking and consider this film itself to be a love letter to filmmaking. So it's not just a horror movie.

Director West describes the film as not just a horror movie, but also a ``love letter to filmmaking,'' including the 1979 setting. The main characters independently produce pornographic films, and the first half of the story is spent mainly depicting them. When a horror movie features a filming crew for a pornographic film, the production process is often ignored, and the staff and actors are likely to be portrayed as frivolous people. However, this film carefully depicts how six men and women pour their passion into pornographic films. The director's important Arrival is hidden in this.

The main character, Maxine, is a stripper who used to dance in a bar, but her boyfriend invites her to star in a pornographic movie. However, she does not feel inferior or subservient to appearing in porn. ``Carve out your own life with your own will and choices.'' This is because her strong feelings can be felt in her words and actions. Furthermore, Lorraine, the recording director who initially looked down on porn, is impressed by the excitement on set and says, ``I want to appear in a sex scene myself as an actress,'' which embarrasses her boyfriend, who is a director. The director is forced to film his girlfriend Lorraine's sex scenes, and is deeply hurt.

What is depicted here is a group of young people who are passionate about movies. The detailed depiction of this "youth" will have great significance in the development of the second half of the story.
