Why do the murderer and the protagonist play two roles?

The main character, Maxine, and the old murderer, Pearl, are actually played by Mia Goth. This intention is clear from the theme of this work mentioned earlier. Pearl, the murderer, is another version of Maxine that she arrives at as a result of her continued avoidance of self-determination. In other words, the structure is such that the results of the main character's life choices are expressed in a parallel world, and his other self becomes a murderer and attacks him. That's why the main character and the old murderer had to be played by the same actor.

A movie that has a similar structure to this one that comes to mind is Takeshi Kitano's ` `TAKESHIS' ' (2005). ``Takeshi'' is an actor who has become a big star, and ``Takeshi'' has never been popular. Their lives intersect, and both are played by Beat Takeshi. ``Isn't the image of myself who succeeded actually a dream of myself who was unable to sell?'' Takeshi Kitano said he conceived of `` TAKESHIS'' ' with such thoughts in mind. Although they take completely different approaches, the two films can be said to depict the fundamental fear inherent in ``life'' using another version of yourself, a doppelgänger.

Although ``X'' is a horror film, it has a theme that encourages philosophical consideration of life, making it a very unique work. The director's intentions were also there.

(Most people in the audience will only realize that Maxine and Pearl played a dual role once they see the end credits. Knowing this, I start ruminating about the acting and scenes on my way home from the movie theater. I wanted the audience to walk home thinking about a theme that hasn't been seen in previous horror movies.

One of the great things about slasher movies is that once you enjoy them in the theater, you can completely forget about them. However, because it is a genre film, it can have unexpected depth, making it a work that will remain in the hearts of the audience. With this in mind, director Ty West must have rebuilt the horror film genre and aimed for even greater heights. Therefore, this film is an extremely passionate ``love letter to cinema'' for the director.

Text: Tetsuya Inagaki

TV director. My personal goal is to realize a documentary project that depicts the obsessions of manga and movie creators. Programs he has directed in the past include ``The Godfather : The Man Who Revolutionized Manga'' (WOWOW), ``Takeshi's Birth: Master and Asakusa'' (NHK), ``Master and Disciple Story: The Encounter That Changed My Life'' [Masahiro Tanaka x Katsuya Nomura ]” (NHK BS Premium)
