"Mannequin" synopsis

Jonathan, a young man who aspires to be a sculptor, is fired from the Mannequin manufacturing company he works for because of his strong commitment to artistry. One day, he discovered what he thought was his best work, a Mannequin, in a department store window. Jonathan was lucky enough to get a job there, but the Prince's department store was in a dilapidated state and was at risk of being taken over by a rival department store. One night, Jonathan is shocked when the Mannequin transforms into a human and starts talking to him. The girl, who calls herself Emmy, has been reincarnated from ancient Egypt and is searching for her beloved. Emmy, who can only become human in front of Jonathan, turns back into a Mannequin when someone else sees her. They begin working together every night to create an innovative shop window, and gradually become attracted to each other. On the other hand, the Prince Department Store windows created by them became popular and sales rapidly increased. However, a rival department store is not happy about this and begins to relentlessly harass Jonathan...

High rotation with rental video

In the late 1980s, when VHS became popular in homes, video rental stores also sprang up. The author, who was a student at the time, was working part-time at a video rental store along a private railway line in Tokyo, and remembers that both inventory and sales were on the rise. The mainstay is of course movies that are big hits in theaters. " Rocky 4 " (85), " Aliens " (86), " Top Gun " (86), " Platoon " (86), " The Last Emperor " (87), " The Untouchables " (87), " Rain Man " (88) For a long period of time, these cars continued to operate at a high rate, where they were immediately lent out as soon as they were returned.

On the other hand, there are many works that were only modest hits when released in theaters, but that turned out to be surprisingly popular on video. For example, John Hughes-related works such as ` `Pretty in Pink' ' (1986) and `` Ferris Bueller's Day Off ' (1986). Michael J. Fox's `` Skyscrapers '' (1986) also became one of the most popular films he starred in, other than ` `Back to the Future' ' (1985). Overall, there were many bright and humorous youth films.

These works are not as big as the first works listed above, nor can they be called super popular works. However, all of them had dramas that you could sympathize with, humor, and pleasant romances, and they all had a good aftertaste. Thanks to the strength of easily accessible video rentals, the popularity of these types of works spreads through word of mouth, gradually increasing their popularity. ``Mannequin'' (1987), which was released in theaters in Japan exactly 35 years ago in February, was just such a work.
