“Everything Everywhere All at Once” Synopsis

Evelyn faces many troubles, including tax issues with the laundromat she runs, a rebellious daughter caring for her father, and a kind but unreliable husband. Meanwhile, her ``husband from another universe'' who has possessed her husband entrusts the fate of the world to her, saying, ``You are the only one who can defeat the great evil that brings chaos to the entire universe.'' Evelyn is surprised, but she is attacked by evil minions and jumps into the multiverse! He gains the power of "Evelyn from another universe", a kung fu master, and takes on the fight, but to his surprise, the true identity of the great evil is his daughter Joy...!

The rift between mother and daughter will destroy the entire multiverse.

``Everything Everywhere All at Once'' achieved the feat of winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. As the director duo, Daniels, come up with unconventional ideas, their originality is met with praise, but there are also voices of naysayers who doubt their work and talent. In addition, because it is a philosophical science fiction story in which the multiverse is confused, because it deals with minority elements such as Asian American culture and LGBTQ, and because it contains a huge number of quotations and parodies, it has become popular on the Internet. There are various considerations and interpretations.

If the amount of information within a work is enormous, the discussion surrounding the work itself is also overcrowded. I'm almost hesitant to write anything more about this movie, but I guess there is. At least on a very personal level. So, I'll try to focus on bagels, cookies, and family conflicts here.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” trailer

First of all, there is no doubt that this film centers on the strained relationship between a mother and daughter. The main character, Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh), marries her childhood friend Waymond (Kee Hui Quan) and moves to the United States. She runs a laundry shop while feeling frustrated with her unreliable husband, worries about the future of her lesbian daughter Joy, has to deal with her relationship with her father, and has to file taxes while being watched by the National Tax Agency. is on the verge of exploding. And yet, he is suddenly given the task of saving the entire multiverse from the brink of extinction!

The bizarre events that occur in the play are basically metaphors, and can be said to be a rite of passage for Evelyn and Joy to escape the curse of parenthood. The biggest obstacle standing in Evelyn's way is Job Tupaki, an entity from another dimension with the power to destroy the multiverse.

It's hinted at in the trailer, and it's revealed quite early on, so I don't think it's a spoiler (if you're interested, please watch the movie first), but Job Tupaki's true identity is Joy from another dimension, and he's going to take over the multiverse. As a result of acquiring a powerful power that moves back and forth, he creates a ``bagel with everything on it''. This is not a metaphor, but the real bagel is when Daniels eats a person. I don't have much knowledge in physics, but I know that if we crammed everything in the universe into a bagel-sized bagel, the mass would be so huge that it would become a black hole that sucked everything in.
