"Everything Everywhere All at Once" Director Daniels Aims for the ultimate fusion of action and gags [Director's Interview Vol.289]
There are many brothers (sisters) who have collaborated on a film, including the Lumière brothers, who invented cinema, the Cohens, Dardenne, the Wachowskis, and Russo, but in recent years there has been an increase in the number of pairs of directors who are close friends. His activity is also outstanding. Among them, Daniels is the one who quickly rose in popularity. The duo's second film, ``Everything Everywhere All at Once'' (hereinafter referred to as ``EvEv''), achieved the most nominations at the Academy Awards with 11 in 10 categories, including Best Picture.
These two people, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, happened to have the same first name. Their previous film, `` Swiss Army Man' ' (2016), set them apart by adding plenty of humor to the bizarre setting of friendship between a young shipwrecked man and a ``corpse'', and now they are one of Hollywood's leading director duos. trying to become Daniels, who has created yet another innovative and daring world in which the main character, Evelyn, travels back and forth across the multiverse to save her family and the world in ``EvEv'', tells us about the key points involved in completing the work and their roles as directors. heard.

Q: The concept of the multiverse has become very popular in recent years, including in Marvel movies. It seems that the two of you have been thinking about this project for a while...
Kwan: That's right. I believed that the multiverse was a unique idea. But in 2015, we heard that `` Rick and Morty '' (an anime depicting adventures in another dimension) was entering its second season, and that `` Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse '' (2018) would also be made after that, so our project changed. I started to worry about being left behind. But what we were thinking about was a fairly large multiverse, and we believed that Marvel and other producers wouldn't take that risk.

Scheinert: But we were Lucky that the multiverse spread to people that way. By the time ``EvEv'' was released, even my parents' generation knew about the multiverse. (In the play) Evelyn is overwhelmed by the multiverse at first, but she gradually gets used to it and even gets fed up with it. That's how it feels (lol).
Kwan: Our goal was to bring together as many stories as possible to represent the chaos of modern living with the internet. It was a very difficult concept to make into a movie, so I was confident that no one would imitate it.
Q: When you watch the work, you can feel the influence of ``The matrix'' (1999) in terms of jumping to other verses. Was that something you were conscious of?
Scheinert: The first matrix movie is our favorite movie.
Kwan: When I first saw The matrix on a VHS copy that my sister's friend gave me, I was moved to tears by the beauty and thrill. I've watched it many times The Day After, and a long time later, at the New Beverly Cinema in LA, which Tarantino owns, there was a special feature on 90s movies, and they were showing a double feature of `` The matrix '' and `` Fight Club '' (1999). It was. The moment I left the theater after watching those two movies in a row, I felt like, ``If I can make movies like this, I can retire as a director.'' I want to entertain the audience as an action movie while also having a thought-provoking philosophical theme... What I felt that day led to ``EbuEbu''.
