Suspense, not mystery
In fact, a different director was offered to work on ``The Lady Vanishes''. The first person I heard was Roy William Neal, who specializes in B-movies (excuse me). However, while filming the background material, trouble occurred with the Yugoslav police, and filming was halted. Neil leaves the project half-heartedly. When the project was restarted, Alfred Hitchcock was finally cast in the role.
In this movie, there is a scene in which Gilbert, wearing a deerstalker hat and a cigar in his mouth, pretends to be Sherlock Holmes, calls Iris "Mr. Watson," and demonstrates his amateur deduction skills. Roy William Neill was the director of the Sherlock Holmes series starring Basil Rathbone. If he had continued as director, it might have been a full-fledged mystery film with more focus on mystery-solving elements.
However, Hitchcock had long thought that ``mysteries were not suited to the medium of film.'' In his words, ``There is no suspense in solving puzzles at all. They are just a kind of intellectual puzzle The Game.'' He believed that "people lack emotion" (*).

That's why in Hitchcock movies, even in the aforementioned Holmes and Watson scene, the two's flirtation takes priority over solving the mystery.
"Let's lay out the facts while smoking a pipe. First, the lady disappeared. Everyone says they didn't see her. But she was there. They were all lying. Why?"
"I don't know."
"Then I'll give you an answer. I don't want you to search for her. She's on the train."
"I've said that many times."
"Let's have some cigars."
"Thank you"
It's too trite to be considered a deduction, but it doesn't matter. What's important is that the two, who were initially at odds with each other, eventually come to terms with each other and throw themselves into a game of detectives. This movie is a romantic comedy with lots of humor.
Gilbert eventually discovers Froy's glasses and engages in a struggle with the magician Doppo over them. The calf and the rabbit are watching the scene, the pigeons are flying around, and Iris kicks Gilbert's butt by mistake, all of the action is incredibly clever. But this is fine. This movie is a romantic comedy with lots of humor.
