“The 39 Steps” Synopsis

Hannay, a diplomat who returned from Canada, was watching Mr. Memory's show at a vaudeville theater in London. At that moment, a gunshot suddenly ensues, and a mysterious woman asks for help and takes her back to her room, but the woman is killed by someone. He himself is forced to go on the run, and takes a train to Scotland, relying on the few clues he has to track down the real culprit.

The monumental “caught-up” style, said to be the culmination of the British era.

Alfred Hitchcock, the god of cinema, achieved success in his homeland of England before moving to Hollywood and gaining even more worldwide fame. Therefore, the more than 50 works he left behind can be broadly divided into the ``British period'' and the ``American period,'' and it is known that each has many fans.

``The 39 Steps'' (35), which I will be introducing today, is a work that can be called the pinnacle and culmination of that ``British period''. In 1999, the BFI (British Film Institute) conducted a survey of the ``Best 100 British Films of the 20th Century'' (*1), and it was ranked 4th in the survey. ''), it can be seen that this work is still widely and deeply loved. But what about here in Japan? In fact, most people have probably never even heard the title.

*1) BEST 100 British Films

Some people may be getting the image of a literary work like Shakespeare's `` Twelfth Night '' from this Japanese title. However, that is a big misunderstanding. The original story is " The Thirty-Nine Steps " written by John Buchan. The novel version is already a high-quality ``get caught up'' spy story, but the movie version is even more interesting. You'll be sucked into the story from the beginning, and you'll be at the mercy of the rapid succession of developments, to the point where you'll completely forget that this is a monochrome classic film.
