Ripple of laughter, singing voice

“I think I heard your laugh, I think I heard your singing voice” (REM “ Losing My Religion ”)

For Charlotte Wells, REM's `` Losing My Religion '' was the first song she memorized the lyrics to. Sophie sings this famous song, which is introduced as Calum's favorite song, at a karaoke competition. When Sophie returns to her seat after singing, the camera captures her father's lonely back. In Aftersun, Callum's back is captured in many scenes. Callum's silent back exudes more emotion than what you can see from the front. There you can see Callum's true self, away from playing the role of a father.

Sophie does not know what her father looks like after she falls asleep. When Callum is alone, he plays the DV camera and watches his mischievous daughter. Sophie's innocent laughter echoes in the dark room. "When you were 11 years old, what did you think you would do in the future?" Calum holds off on answering Sophie's innocent question.

Much of Karam's background is not discussed in this film. But the sudden silence between them says as much as the calmness of the summer sea. Callum can't believe he's over 30 years old. He says he can't even imagine what he will look like at 40 years old. Callum's heart seems torn between wanting to be a good father to Sophie even decades from now, and wanting to disappear from this world right now. Sophie's round eyes were observing Calum's movements and emotions. Sophie is a girl who loves mischief, is smart, and has good intuition. Sophie has the intelligence to be considerate of her father's circumstances, but when she needs to be pampered, she goes all out. I can't hear her adorable laugh. Frankie Corio gives a genius performance that you will never forget once you see it.

I will never forget. Sophie will never forget the unconditional love she received from her father the summer she was 11 years old. His father's beloved phrase `` Losing My Religion '' resonates more than just with Callum's feelings for his daughter. "I think I heard you laugh, I think I heard you sing." This phrase resonates as a beautiful "passing dialogue" that the adult Sophie speaks to her father at the time. Under the same sky, father and daughter laugh together forever.
