A man who woke up from a great sleep

The completed song, ``The Long Goodbye'' (1973), received a fierce backlash from die-hard Chandler fans. This is because the story was set in the good old 50's LA and was changed to the 70's, a time filled with the hippie movement and drug culture.

The original story begins with Marlowe and Lennox meeting, but the movie begins with Marlowe suddenly getting up from his bed and going to buy cat food for his cat. An indescribably languid, sleepwalking mood. ...Yes, the Marlowe of this work is indeed a kind of sleepwalker. Let me quote Robert Altman's comment.

``I had decided to call him Rip Van Marlowe after the fairy tale hero Rip Van Winkle.''Marlowe wakes up from a 20-year slumber and roams the landscape of Los Angeles in the early 1970s. He is a man who is trying to evoke the morals of the past.'' (*3)

Just as Rip Van Winkle falls asleep in the deep forest and when he comes down from the mountain, 20 years have passed, so Philip Marlowe wakes up after 20 years of sleep. That's why the opening scene of this movie has to be the scene where Marlowe wakes up from lying in bed.

Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, James Garner, James Caan, Robert Montgomery. Various actors have played the role of "tough guy" Philip Marlowe. However, Elliott Gould, who plays Marlowe in this film, always has an unkempt head, sleepy eyes, and is constantly smoking a cigarette. He is still not used to this world where he has traveled back in time.

Why are the women living next door indulging in yoga meditation half-naked? Why do the guards want to imitate people so much? Why are gangsters suddenly wearing only pants (and why is one of them Arnold Schwarzenegger)? Everything is full of mystery, everything is unclear. ``The Long Goodbye'' is a story about a half-awake, half-sleepy man who confronts a world that is extremely absurd.
