nameless man and princess

It was quite late when I encountered director Lee Chang-dong's ``Oasis'' (2002). That was when the revival was released in 2019. It felt like a hammer had been swung down on my head. A soul-shaking experience. I remember feeling dazed after watching it, wondering if such an amazing movie existed in the world. If you haven't seen it yet, I seriously urge you to watch it as soon as possible.

The story begins when a young man, Jung-du (Sol Kyung-gu), returns to his family after completing his sentence for a hit-and-run incident. However, no one welcomes him as he is the nuisance of the family. When he eventually visits the apartment of the victim's family to apologize, he finds there a woman named Gong-joo (Moon So-ri), who is physically disabled due to cerebral palsy. Conversation is difficult because he has difficulty speaking. Jung-do and Gong-joo eventually develop a strange sense of solidarity and become irreplaceable to each other.

"' Oasis' is just a love story. There was no special reason for it; I had always wanted to write a love story, and I had an inner desire to experience that kind of love." I wanted to show you what I can do.” (*1)

says Lee Chang-dong. Yes, this movie is just a love story. A universal love story where a man and a woman meet and fall in love. As the story progresses, it turns out that Jeong-do goes to prison in place of his brother who was involved in a hit-and-run, and Gong-joo is left alone in his old apartment. However, Lee Chang-dong probably does not want to mess with South Korea's social problems. At times, he cuts out fragments of the love between Outsider who have been driven to a corner of the world, sometimes with surprisingly coldness, and other times with a surprisingly gentle gaze.

"In the past, I lost my destination in a maze. I didn't know the reason for living. But I was able to survive because of you. I want to give everything to you. I'll walk to the sky for you."

When Jung-do sings passionately about his love for his beloved at karaoke, Gong-joo sings softly like this on the station platform.

"If I were the sky, I'd want to be dyed in your face. Like the red sunset, I'd want to be dyed in your cheeks."

John Doe = John Doe is a slang word that means ``unnamed man'' in English, and Gongju means ``princess'' in Korean. Yes, ``Oasis'' is a story about a nameless man who falls in love with a princess. I want you to remember the scene when the two first met. She lights up the room with a hand mirror, and the light shines directly into John Doe's eyes, causing him to look like he's dazzling several times. From the beginning, Gong-joo was a dazzling presence for John-do.
