A monumental band movie that never loses its luster.

If you subdivide movie genres, I think there is a genre called ``band movies.'' The key point is the music, which goes well with the movie, and band movies are a treasure trove of elements that make the work interesting, such as the gathering of unique members, the clash of egos, successes and setbacks, and the excitement of the live scene. That's why there are so many masterpieces out there, but the one film that director Atsuhiro Yamashita, who has made band films such as Linda Linda Linda and Ajizono Universe , has said was the inspiration for his own films The Commitments. This is a masterpiece that can be called a monumental band movie.

Jimmy and his friends decide to form a band that plays authentic soul music in Dublin, Ireland, and put out an advertisement for members. A story about how various personalities come together to form the band ``The Commitments.'' For Jimmy, who became the band's manager, it was a challenge to make his dreams come true, but at the same time, the band's fate ultimately became a bittersweet chapter in his youth. I think this "hollow bitterness" is one of the factors that made this film a masterpiece of a band movie.

At the climax, Jimmy looks in the mirror and asks himself a question (the setting is that he is being interviewed by a reporter), and then utters the following line, which is a nod to the lyrics of Procol Harum's famous song ``Blue Shadows.''

"Blue Shadow" PV

“Jimmy, what did you learn the most from being in the band?”

"That's a difficult question. You spin around on a Fandango and get Vertigo. But the audience demands more."

"Jimmy, what do you mean?"

“I mean, I don’t know.”

Summing up the band's chaotic days, Jimmy was left with The Truth: "I don't know." But there was also clearly a sense of accomplishment in having learned a life lesson instinctively. Learning something from setbacks and failures that cannot be expressed in words. The real thrill of a youth band movie is packed into this line.
