“Before Sunrise” What is the philosophy of time and space created by Richard Linklater?

American and French films
This film is said to be based on the old American film `` Encounter '' (39), directed by Leo McCarey. This story depicts a romance born out of a sea voyage, and from there it transitions into a romance drama similar to `` Your Name '' (53).
However, the film ``Before Sunrise'' is unique in that it only deals with scenes of the couple traveling and the time they meet. To that extent, the conversation between the two is depicted for a long time.
As the story progresses, you'll notice some strange things. In a typical romantic movie, whether the main characters end up together or apart, dramatic incidents that test their love for each other occur, and the story goes through ups and downs. In fact, works such as ``Encounter'' and ``Your Name'' are structured like this. However, in this work, there are only barriers such as time constraints and geographical constraints of living far away from each other, and the content itself is about two people who are attracted to each other and various topics such as love and other topics. They are all depictions of people talking about it.

This method can be better understood by looking at his previous work `` Bad Tuning '' and his later film `` Waking Life '' (2001). Linklater incorporates into his work the naturalistic and realistic conversational techniques found in literature and stage plays, which not only depict beauty but also portray people as they are. In particular, by capturing youth pop culture in an artistic context, as in the case of ``Bad Tuning,'' he has unearthed genres that have never existed before and acquired originality not found in existing works. This is a characteristic shared by directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith.
The two of them tour the ancient capital while conversing. The improvisational nature of filming and acting is also utilized here. The influence of the French film art movement ``Nouvelle Vague'' can also be seen here. In this respect, it can be said that the film takes a similar approach to films such as `` Pulp Fiction '' (1994) directed by Tarantino, who is a follower of Jean-Luc Godard.
This film depicts a love story between an American and a Frenchman, and it feels like it shows the combination of the pop culture framework created by Hollywood and the artistry of French films, as mentioned above. In that sense, the story and the creation of the work are synchronized here. And that seems to be the clearest explanation of the content of American independent films that flourished in the 1990s.
