“The Vanishing” What is the true fear and anxiety left to the audience?

“Another” creepy protagonist
The film begins with a young couple, Rex (Jean Vervoorts) and Saskia (Johanna Ter Stege), traveling from the Netherlands to France. On the way, they experience the usual marital quarrel that often occurs on trips, but they make up and stop at a drive-in. That's where the incident occurs.
Saskia, with a bright smile on her face, leaves Rex in the car to get a drink and never returns. Rex, of course, does everything he can to try to find Saskia, but she is never found.
Up to this point, the plot seems like a typical one for a movie. It is only after this point that the film begins to have an unusual atmosphere. The main character is suddenly replaced by Raymond, a middle-aged French man played by Bernard Pierre Donnadieu, who does not seem to have any relationship with the two characters up until that point.

Raymond has a wife and a daughter, and from the outside he seems like a happy family man. However, when he is alone, he starts to behave suspiciously. It seems that he is steadily progressing with his plan to lure a young woman into his car and kidnap her. The audience will remember the incident with Saskia and have a bad feeling.
What's interesting is that whenever Raymond tries to put his carefully planned plans into practice, they end up failing miserably. Although his acts are extremely vicious, his foolishness makes you laugh, and you might even feel as if you are an accomplice to his crimes.
