The darkness of the real world depicted by the director's "experience"

Neill Blomkamp's debut came suddenly and with a shock. ` `District 9 '' (2009), a unique work that was highly praised around the world, received an unprecedented acclaim, winning various film awards and film festivals, including the Academy Awards that year. Neill Blomkamp, who had a proven track record in short films, poured all of his experience into making ``District 9,'' his commercial feature debut.

Of course, his experience as a filmmaker is a reflection of the reality of discrimination in the real world. The movie begins with a giant saucer carrying a shrimp-shaped alien flying into the Republic of South Africa. The South African Republic, where the story takes place, is the birthplace of director Neill Blomkamp, and it is this local experience that has had a great influence on his future film career.

“District 9” preview

So, here's the story of District 9. The town is in an uproar when a shrimp-shaped alien suddenly appears. Gradually, the citizens develop an unfathomable hatred towards these aliens. The South African government establishes an isolated residential area for aliens, but this extremely poor area gradually becomes a hive of human gangs. The streets are lined with "No Aliens" signs, harshly reflecting the world of discrimination between humans and aliens. This depiction of discrimination comes from the director's ``experience'' in his life. The director's films thoroughly reflect aspects of South Africa's racial segregation policy, commonly known as ``apartheid''.

This portrayal of social disparity and discrimination, as well as the reflection of apartheid, is also the underlying theme of the director's ``Elysium'' (2013). In contrast to his previous work, which depicted the discrimination between humans and aliens, this work, ``Elysium,'' further sublimates his talent for social satire by depicting the real-world disparity between the poor and the rich even more poignantly. The unreasonable disparity between humans that "Elysium" depicts is by no means fiction.
