What is a happy way of working? A story of “independence”

Two encounters further shake up Woody's desperate situation: his first meeting with new character Forky, and his first reunion with Bo Peep in nine years.

First, let me explain about Forky. He is a toy that Bonnie "made" in kindergarten craft class. He is a toy made from trash such as a spork and a popsicle stick, and he thinks of his own identity as trash.

What's interesting here is that Woody witnesses the moment when a toy has a soul. It's a new approach that has never been seen before, to put the spotlight on the toy's "beginnings." As Woody teaches Forky how toys should be, he returns to his own roots. What is the purpose of his existence?

At the same time, Woody senses the tide of a new generational change. Bonnie wants to take Forky with her wherever she goes, and Woody eagerly supports her. This is because Woody believes it is his duty to "work for his owner," even though he knows that the love is not directed towards him. "Things weren't so hard in the old days," he complains to Buzz, and when he earnestly pleads with Forky, "You don't know how much you are loved," it is heartbreaking to watch. This is the sad end of a workaholic for whom "work is me and work is home." This film stands out among the series for its "work movie" aspect.

Meanwhile, Woody has a fateful reunion with Bo Peep. Freed from the concept of "ownership," Bo travels around the country, enjoying interacting with the toys and children he encounters along the way. Woody is shocked by the dramatic change and fulfilled expression of his former friend and beloved. Bo asks Woody, "Don't you want to see the wider world?" Presented with new options and values, Woody becomes even more distressed. This part, too, becomes very easy to understand if you replace it with "working for a company or going freelance." Every aspect of this film is a story of independence that questions the way we work.
