Difficult script production

Director Billy Wilder, who was preparing to make The Seven Year Itch (1955), was forced to suspend production. This is because a new job has come his way. He was given the lead role in a romantic comedy film based on the play ``Sabrina Fair'' by Samuel Taylor. This was the beginning of ``Sabrina'' (54).

In addition to Wilder, the screenwriting team included screenwriter Ernest Lehmann and original author Samuel Taylor. It seemed like the project was going well, but things look very different. Unsatisfied with some of the changes made to her play, Taylor left early (at the same time, rehearsals were scheduled for the stage version of Sabrina Fair). (It is said that Taylor had no choice but to leave in order to participate in the stage production.)

“Sabrina” preview

The remaining two were at a crossroads. Not only had the original author left, but sexual issues had even surfaced in the script. This is because the character of Sabrina, played by the innocent Audrey, is involved in a rather sexual scenario. Even before Hepburn's problems, the censorship system at the time was overly strict. Censorship by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) prohibited sexual scenes. For filmmakers at the time, the first major task was to successfully evade censorship.

How can we show the evolution of an innocent girl from a rural town into a mature adult woman without such sexual scenes? What should I do to embody the mental and physical change from a pure person to a mature person?

Director Wilder thought about it. What came to mind was the change in Sabrina's attire. From a chaste girl in a jumper skirt to a beautiful woman in a cocktail dress, the change in clothing hinted at her sexual growth. All that was left was to find a designer. A talented designer who can express Sabrina's growth through her clothes alone.
