Nostalgia and catharsis created from handmade gimmick videos
Let's start with the technical details. Daniels is good at creating gimmicky footage that, while often computer-generated, still feels strangely organic and handmade. The technology that supports this is "motion tracking," a technology that can track moving objects in footage, but that's complicated, so let's leave that aside. Anyway, what Daniels does is to go outside the studio as much as possible to shoot on location, relying as little on CG as possible, and actually shoot the materials to be used for compositing on location.
For example, Daniels' music video for Manchester Orchestra's "Simple Math" shows a man driving down a country road trying to avoid a deer, losing control of his car and causing it to roll over. As the car continues to roll, the viewer's life flashes before his eyes.
Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math
In the picture, various things fly around the man, mixing with his memories of the past. Glass, falling leaves, a love letter he wrote as a child, a Game Boy he used to play with, a ukulele, and the members of the Manchester Orchestra and their instruments... The present and the past are mixed together in the "rotating" movement, and the style of the work, which brings about a simultaneous surge of nostalgia and catharsis, is clearly connected to "Swiss Army Man."
When making this music video, Daniels actually scattered fallen leaves, levitated a Game Boy in the air, and shot live-action footage so that they wouldn't add CG later. Although there were limitations due to the low budget, Daniels commented that "it's more fun to actually do it," and their style is to create a worldview by making full use of what is available on site.
The image of the forest from his childhood is also carried over to Swiss Army Man. Incidentally, in Swiss Army Man, Hank and Many make a bus-like object using trees from the forest, but this was not prepared in advance by the staff, but was made on the spot using trees and other materials from the forest at the filming location. In other words, the bus is made only from materials that Hank can get his hands on in the film.
The biggest commonality between the "Simple Math" music video and Swiss Army Man is that the man who caused the accident (played by Manchester Orchestra leader Andy Hull) had a crush on a woman named Sarah when he was a boy. Yes, she is the same woman who Hank fell in love with, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Swiss Army Man. Awkward relationships with fathers are also a motif that can be found in both films, and the richness of the drama packed into the 5 minute 20 second video is impressive.
Daniels has a deep connection with the Manchester Orchestra, and the fantastic soundtrack for Swiss Army Man was composed by Andy Hull, star of Simple Math, and lead guitarist Robert McDowell.
