A happy “encounter” of novels, music, and movies Little Nights, Little Love”
2019.09.21
Beyond countless “encounters”
A novel and song were born from the ``encounter'' between writer Kotaro Isaka and musician Kazuyoshi Saito. Isaka's attention to Rikiya Imaizumi, who was an indie producer at the time, and the fact that he was hired to adapt the novel into a film can also be called an "encounter." Director Imaizumi was aided by the sensibility and skill of screenwriter Kenichi Suzuki, cinematographer Yuta Tsukinaga, and the solid acting skills of the actors, creating a commercial film that he himself calls ``a scale unlike anything I've ever seen before.'' This year is sure to be a breakthrough year for director Imaizumi, as `` What's Love '' (based on Mitsuyo Tsunoda, starring Yuki Kishii), which was released in April, became a long-running hit?

If the movie ``Little Nights, Little Love'' becomes a hit, there is hope that a spin-off or sequel will be produced. As introduced earlier, the contents of two of the original short story collections are barely mentioned in the movie. Regarding the four stories on which the film is based, there are still elements that are not reflected in the film, such as the last ``Nachtmusik'', which takes place nine years after Winston Ono's re-challenge for the title.
With these materials alone, it seems likely that a spin-off video work centered around characters other than Sato and Saki could be planned. What if Isaka goes even further and is inspired by the lyrics of Saito's ``Little Night'' and the original episode of the movie, and writes a new short story that shares the same worldview and characters? If that happens, the possibility of a sequel movie will become even more likely, and I can't help but pray for a small miracle that it will become a reality.
