A controversial work that caused a bigger stir than “Brazil”

Even in the world of film, there are few people with the solid artistry of Terry Gilliam. If we are to make the most of his unique talent, it is essential to give him creative freedom. However, on the other hand, Gilliam seems to be bad at looking at everything from a bird's-eye view or approaching a project with a long-term scheme in mind. Therefore, as a result of leaving such management to others and immersing myself in the production in front of me, I often find myself in a ridiculous situation...

Gilliam's film career is full of such anecdotes. If we were to try and rank the legendary troubled works, number one would definitely be ``The Man Who Killed Don Quixote'' (18), which took more than 20 years to complete. 3rd place went to `` Brazil '' (85), which had a constant battle with the studio. And in the middle of these is the fantasy blockbuster ``The Adventures of Baron Munchausen'' (1988), which we will be introducing today.

This movie is often ridiculed as a ``failure that will go down in movie history''. But now is the time to ask. Can it really be called a foolish failure? And what kind of situation was going on behind the scenes during production?

“The Adventures of Baron Munchausen” preview

"The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" is set in Germany at the end of the 18th century. A traveling entertainment troupe is performing ``The Adventures of the Blowing Baron'' at a theater in a town that is being attacked by the Turkish army. In the midst of this, an old man bursts in, brandishing a saber and saying, ``I am Munchausen himself, also known as the Whirlpool Baron!'' From there, a bizarre folk tale begins to be told, and it is unclear whether it is The Truth or a hoax.

According to one theory, this work was originally conceived by Gilliam for his beloved daughter. It was right after the dark and crazy ``Brazil'', so I guess they wanted to make a fantastic fantasy movie that would be suitable as a bedtime story for their daughter. At least that's how it was supposed to be at first. However, this work gets mired in a quagmire from the middle, and descends into chaos that no one could have imagined.
