Even in the world of film, there are few people with the solid artistry of Terry Gilliam. If we are to make the most of his unique talent, it is essential to give him creative freedom. "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" is set in Germany at the end of the 18th century. A traveling entertainment troupe is performing ``The Adventures of the Blowing Baron'' at a theater in a town that is being attacked by the Turkish army. In the midst of this, an old man bursts in, brandishing a saber and saying, ``I am Munchausen himself, also known as the Whirlpool Baron!'' From there, a bizarre folk tale begins to be told, and it is unclear whether it is The Truth or a hoax.

According to one theory, this work was originally conceived by Gilliam for his beloved daughter. It was right after the dark and crazy ``Brazil'', so I guess they wanted to make a fantastic fantasy movie that would be suitable as a bedtime story for their daughter. At least that's how it was supposed to be at first. However, this work gets mired in a quagmire from the middle, and descends into chaos that no one could have imagined.
