A sense of fear that only comes from animatronics

Q: Regarding the setting of dinosaurs being released into human society, there have been scenes of great panic in the past, such as the T-Rex rampaging through the streets of San Diego in " The Lost World: Jurassic Park " (1997). did. However, this time, such depictions are intentionally avoided.

Trevorrow: Personally, I felt that the monster panic type of development was unrealistic. Of course, I love Godzilla and wanted to do a similar production, but this is different (lol). In keeping with the intentions of Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg, dinosaurs were seen as part of the animal ecosystem. It's not a monster running rampant in the city. The main premise is that dinosaurs remain in nature and rarely interact with humans. Rather than jumping into the deep end of the pool, I tried to create a sense of dipping my toes in the water.

Q: In terms of staying in nature, the setting is that a large number of dinosaurs live at Biosyn, a company that also conducts dinosaur DNA research, and is located in the Southern Alps of Italy.

Trevorrow: We were looking for a mountainous region with deep valleys and microclimates (climate changes near the surface). Different species of dinosaurs adapt to different environments, and many species can grow in different microclimates. Moreover, it becomes a valley and cannot be escaped. Northern Italy met these conditions. We have created a space where dinosaurs can live in peace.

Q: On the other hand, there are spectacles throughout the film, such as the black-trafficked Atrochiraptors attacking the protagonist Owen (Chris Pratt) and others on the Mediterranean island of Malta. The scenes on Malta, a world heritage site, have a distinctly different impression from previous series.

Trevorrow: The island of Malta has previously been used as a filming location for `` Troy '' (2004) and `` World War Z '' (2013), but those were "reenactments" of ancient Greece and Jerusalem. I think this is the first major movie to be set on the island of Malta. The people of Malta must be happy too. I wonder if they will build a dinosaur statue or something in the square (lol). The island of Malta has a long history of film filming, including a huge swimming pool.

Q: The appeal of the "Jurassic" series is the combination of CG and animatronics, and movie fans are curious about where the animatronics were used.

Trevorrow: Many of the dinosaurs that appear in the secret farm and black market scenes are created as full-scale animatronic models and then meticulously composited with digital footage. The thing I was most particular about with the animatronics was the head of Giganotosaurus (the strongest dinosaur making its first appearance this time), and it was extremely effective in the scene where it appears in front of people who are about to be attacked. I think. I was able to create a fear that would traumatize me forever.

Q: The dinosaur's face looming in front of people and threatening them is a staple of the "Jurassic" series, and is also linked to many movies such as " Alien " (1979).

Trevorrow: It's true that it happened twice this time (lol). After that, I'm thinking of a convincing development to prevent dinosaurs from eating people's heads. These scenes have the effect of convincing humans that dinosaurs are "real." Both of these scenes used animatronics, so I'd like you to feel the effect.
