"Everything Everywhere All at Once" Director Daniels Aims for the ultimate fusion of action and gags [Director's Interview Vol.289]
Our origins are Chow Hsing Chi and Jackie Chan.
Q: Some of the reactions to ``Ebuebu'' point out the influence of Japanese anime such as Satoshi Kon's ``Paprika'' (2006).
Scheinert: It's true that Japanese anime is the most interesting and thrilling for movie creators around the world. Satoshi Kon's inspirations include `` Paprika '' by Christopher Nolan's `` Inception '' (2010), and `` Millennium Actress '' (2001) by Darren Aronofsky's ` `Black Swan '' (10). ), and many others. Despite the unconventional ideas, the great thing about Japanese anime is that the characters lead the story. Hayao Miyazaki's works easily surpassed the common sense of us Americans, who were accustomed to works in which good and evil were clearly separated. Masaaki Yuasa's `` Mind The Game '' (2004) influenced ``EbEv''. When I saw it for the first time, I was impressed and thought, ``What is this? Movies don't need rules,'' and I wanted to make a live-action version of this kind of work. The hurdles are high, but these challenges are what creators look forward to.

Q: I think there is a lot of collaboration between the directors, but is there a division of roles?
Scheinert: It's like we're always wrestling... (lol)
Kwan: When we first teamed up, there was a bit of distance between us, but over the 12 years we've been together, we've gotten to know each other's characteristics. I'm still not good at casting. But he (Scheinert) went to school to become an actor, so he believes in casting from that perspective.
Scheinert: In editing, after I make a rough cut, Dan (Kwan) examines a lot of material to create an accurate final cut. When it comes to music, Dan is the main person who interacts with composers. I like production design, and I take the lead on things like props and explosions.
Q: Just like in ``Swiss Army Man,'' the two artists' individuality comes to the fore in ``EvEv.'' I feel like that's a "stupid" gag in the best sense of the word...
Scheinert: We both love action-comedy movies. Moreover, I have been influenced by the works of Chow Hsin-chi and Jackie Chan, not just American works that compete based on strength. This idea was reflected in our early short films and music videos, and in this version of ``EvEv'', we came up with the idea of doing something ridiculous when jumping to another verse.
Kwan: And because we're nerds, we dig into the ridiculousness of things like that. I studied quantum mechanics, quantum physics, probability theory, etc., and drew diagrams of the world of the multiverse, and before I knew it, I had become a ``science geek'' (lol). I fantasized about how Douglas Adams felt when he was writing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy .
