The World is Yours

Tony murders his boss, Frank (Robert Loggia), takes his mistress, Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer), and becomes a drug lord in both name and reality. When I suddenly looked up at the dawn sky, I saw Pan American Airways' ``The World is Yours'' advertising airship.

The phrase "The World is Yours" is also a motif used in the original " Face of the Underworld ." The main character, gangster Tony Camonte (Paul Muni), finds his apartment surrounded by police due to the betrayal of his sister Ceska (Anne Vozerk). Despite informing him, Chesker, who cannot give up his love for his brother, cooperates with Tony in a gunfight, but is killed by a bullet. Desperate after losing his beloved sister, Tony staggers out into an alley, where he is shot dead by a waiting policeman. The words "The World is Yours" were written on a neon Signs above his head.

When Tony Montana looked up at the dawn sky, his life was bright. To Tony Montana, who boasts that he wants to have everything in the world, ``The World is Yours'' must have seemed like a divine revelation. They even went out of their way to have a statue carved with this phrase in the fountain of their mansion.

Brian De Palma wanted ``The World is Yours'' to stand out as a motif that would run through the film, even more so than the original ``Face of the Underworld.'' This story is about one man's success and destruction, so the visuals have to complement that as well.

Instead of setting the scene in an alleyway, De Palma fixed the fight on the second floor of Tony's house and changed it so that Tony is shot from behind and falls into a fountain. At the moment of his death, ``The World is Yours'' is not something to be looked up to, but something to be looked down upon, in the sense that there is no future beyond this. Tony falls into the fountain and dies face down. I can no longer look up at “The World is Yours.”

Every time I watch this movie again, I am moved by the desolate sadness of the final scene. I am secretly convinced that what ``Scarface'' should be truly praised for is not its eye-watering depictions of violence or heavy use of the F-word, but rather its sentimentalism, the exact opposite.
