A long-running hit during the mini theater boom
In the late 1980s, there was a mini-theater boom in Tokyo, and many long-running hits were born one after another. In particular, the enthusiasm for ``Wings of Desire'' was amazing. After its release at Hibiya's Chante Cine, it received high praise from the media and word of mouth, and became a long-running hit for over 30 weeks. I'm surprised that the movie was subsequently moved to another theater and continued to be shown for over a year. I also went to Chante Cine when it was released, but at first I gave up because of the long line. I was finally able to see it on my second attempt, prepared to wait in line.
Director Wim Wenders is a well-known German genius. At the time, he was attracting attention in Japan for his film Paris, Texas (1984), which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, but it was this film that made his name even more widely known. As a result of this long-running hit, films such as `` Alice in the City '' (1974), `` Mawarimichi '' (75), `` Wandering '' (76), and `` Tokyoga '' (1985), which had not been released in Japan until then, landed one after another. ``Paris, Texas'' was also reevaluated, and Wenders instantly became the darling of the subculture.
"Paris, Texas" preview
The core of the story is the presence of angels who watch over the city of Berlin. They were quietly involved in people's lives. Adults cannot see it, but children can. One such angel, Damiel (Bruno Ganz), falls in love with Marion (Solveig Demartin), a trapeze artist at the circus. Damiel meets actor Peter Falk (himself), a former angel, and at his advice, he decides to become a human...
Behind the creation of this Wenders-style fantasy, there were many people who provided great inspiration. Let's think about the existence of such an "angel" for Wenders.
