The key to married life is to “play your role”

From here on, I will be giving away spoilers at full throttle, so be warned.

In the end, Amy's disappearance was fake, and she planned to set a trap so that Nick would be suspected of murder, and then commit suicide without anyone knowing. It was all revenge against Nick who betrayed her. However, after the man and woman at the motel stole all her money, she had nowhere to go and cried to her ex-boyfriend Deji, and was hidden in his house.

Eventually, Amy sees a TV press conference where Nick apologizes for being a poor husband and asks his wife to come home soon, and decides to go back to him. She slits Dezzy's throat with a cutter during sex, lies to him that she was kidnapped by Dezzy, and returns home happily.

Amy is no crazy psychopath, but an incredibly intelligent woman who knows what marriage really needs, and is trying to fix her broken marriage (even though she did slit her ex's throat).

So what is the theme of this movie, "What is most important in a marriage?" In fact, Amy's monologue in the middle of the movie explains it very clearly. Although it is a bit long, I will quote it here.

"Nick was looking for a good girl too, so that's what I tried to do.

(snip)

He lived only in the present and did what he wanted.

I enjoyed it quite a bit and discovered a new side of myself.

Cheerfulness, humour, lightheartedness.

I, on the other hand, gave him intelligence and brought him up to my level.

He disguised himself as the “ideal man.”

We were both happy playing different people. The happiest people in the world.

If you're not happy, there's no point.

But Nick became lazy and a hopeless man.

Yet he wanted my love unconditionally and brought me to his hometown even though he had no money.

And, to top it all off, he switched to a young, busty "hot girl."

(snip)

Adults should make an effort. Adults should make amends. Adults should get rewarded."

Yes, the most important thing in married life is simply to "play a role."
