Director change from Spielberg to Eastwood

The original story of "American Sniper" is the autobiography of Chris Kyle, a sniper of the US Navy SEALs who won numerous medals. Kyle is a " legendary sniper " who is said to have killed 160 combatants in Iraq. As soon as this autobiography was released, it sold astonishingly well, and it was ranked number one on the New York Times bestseller list for 13 weeks.

Screenwriter Jason Hall, who noticed this autobiography, pitched The Hangover II" (2009) and " Silver Linings Playbook " (2012). Cooper liked the idea and acquired the film rights in collaboration with Warner Bros., and launched the project.

At first, there was a plan for Bradley Cooper to direct the film himself, but it was shelved because he was too inadequately prepared for his first directorial work. There was also a proposal for David O. Russell, who had teamed up with Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook, to direct the film, but for various reasons this was also shelved. Spielberg was full of enthusiasm as he pitched ideas for the script, but the script ballooned to nearly 160 pages, far too long for a two-hour movie. He decided that it would be difficult to produce the film if things continued this way, and he quickly stepped down as director. However, Spielberg was certain of one thing. He thought that Eastwood, who he had worked with on "Flags of Our Fathers " and "Letters from Iwo Jima ," would be interested in the project. Spielberg contacted Eastwood himself, and it was officially announced that Eastwood would be directing.
