Kurosawaism in "The Bodyguard"

Kevin Costner, born in 1955, was an audience member watching Steve McQueen in his prime. And Costner was still young. McQueen died in 1980. In fact, his heyday was from the 1960s to the early 1970s, as his output declined in his later years. It may seem surprising, but McQueen died early, so he was only a star for just over 20 years. In other words, Steve McQueen was no longer in this world when Costner debuted as an actor.

Kevin Costner has chosen `` A Perfect World '' (1993) as his next film after ` `The Bodyguard '' out of numerous offers. Clint Eastwood, who directed and co-starred in this film, was born in 1930, the same year as McQueen. They have one thing in common: McQueen was an actor who created an era of television westerns with `` The Guns '' and Eastwood with `` Rawhide .'' McQueen's breakthrough films were `` The Magnificent Seven '', Eastwood's `` A Fistful of Dollars '' (64), and Costner's `` Silverado '', but the fact that they were Westerns is just a coincidence. There is a strange connection that is difficult to explain.

In the middle of `` The Bodyguard ,'' popular singer Rachel (Whitney Houston) and her The Bodyguard Frank (Kevin Costner) fall in love and go to the movies on a date. The movie projected on the screen was Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961). ``Yojimbo'' is released worldwide under the title ``YOJINBO,'' but when translated into English, it becomes ``THE BODYGUARD.''

This may seem like a lame quote, but it is said that the aforementioned ``The Magnificent Seven'' is a remake of `` Seven Samurai '' (54), and ``A Fistful of Dollars'' is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's works called ``Yojimbo''. Find common ground. Also, in ``The Bodyguard,'' for example, the moving shot of chasing a suspicious person who has broken into Rachel's mansion feels like an imitation of the shot of the wild samurai invading on horseback in ``Seven Samurai.'' You can get a glimpse of the impact on

“Yojimbo” preview

Regarding this quote, Kevin Costner said at a press conference when he came to Japan: ``The mystery is that Lawrence Kasdan is a huge Kurosawa fan.He is a filmmaker who is inspired by Japanese culture and movies. It may have seemed strange to me, but this is actually a scene he incorporated into the film as a homage to director Kurosawa." By the way, the line in the movie, ``I watched ('Yojimbo') 62 times,'' was apparently Costner's idea. And, perhaps because it incorporates what is known as ``Kurosawaism,'' ``The Bodyguard'' became a huge hit in Japan as well.

What sold even better was the soundtrack edition. It has sold a total of 50 million copies worldwide, and its theme song "Always Love You" by Whitney Houston set a record by staying at number one on the US singles chart for 14 consecutive weeks. In terms of sales, it still holds the No. 1 spot as a soundtrack album (as of 2021).
