"The Crying Game" synopsis

Off-duty British soldier Jodie is kidnapped by the IRA after being lured away by an attractive blonde woman, and is used as a bargaining chip for the release of her fellow British prisoners. Jody often talks to Fergus, who has taken on the role of watchman, in a profound tone, and before he knows it, the two begin to exchange words. While a mutual sympathy and friendship grows, the order for Jody's execution is finally handed down. Jody, prepared for death, entrusts her final wish to Fergus: ``After I die, please find my beloved in London, waiting for my return, and please support me.''

Neil Jordan's masterpiece nominated for 6 Academy Awards

It's been over 30 years since ``The Crying Game'' (1992) was released. I learned about this movie when I was in high school. I think the trigger was probably a local late-night program that everyone from Kyushu would know (if you go to the program's homepage now, it says that the long history of the program came to an end in March 2021). Ta). I still vividly remember that this film was featured in a movie corner that was aired irregularly there, and the introducer praised the film while skillfully avoiding the ``middle development''.

At the time, the general way to promote The Crying Game was to spread word of mouth in a way that wouldn't spoil the core development.

"The Crying Game" preview

If you listen to the audio commentary on the DVD, you can see that the director, Neil Jordan, was also very concerned about this point. He is said to have written a letter to the press and critics before the film's release in theaters in the UK and the US, asking, ``I would appreciate it if you would not touch on the developments in the middle.''

However, in the end, many people kept the secret, not because they received letters of request, but because they each decided that this was a high-quality film worthy of it. This promotion worked, and the film became a huge hit in the United States. Furthermore, it was nominated for six Academy Awards (it only won for Best Original Screenplay), which was a great achievement considering the scale of the film's production.
