A simple yet powerful and traditional structure

This work is made up of several simple elements that are strongly intertwined. First of all, the first third of the movie is the story of the "watchman" and the "hostage". It is a story about people from completely opposite positions who would never have met under unusual circumstances, and a faint friendship is born.

According to Neil Jordan, this type of theme is familiar to Ireland, which has long had a strained relationship with Britain. For example, in Frank O'Connor's short story ``The State Guest,'' a young Irish soldier is conflicted when he is ordered to kill a British soldier. Also, in a play written by Brendan Behan, a hostage and a guard have a heart-to-heart communication, and before they know it, an order is given to execute the hostage.

True to that theory, "The Crying Game" begins with an off-duty British soldier, Jody (Forest Whitaker), being lured out by a woman, only to be taken to a place where he is kidnapped by the IRA and used as a bargaining chip to secure the release of a fellow soldier held captive by the British.

During this time, the main character, a man named Fergus (Stephen Rea), watches over the IRA. Jody, a hostage with a mysterious capacity for acceptance, often speaks to Fergus, who is acting as a guard, in a profound tone. Fergus also responds with various words out of curiosity, and before they know it, a conversation is born between the two, an exchange of emotions is born, and even something like sympathy and friendship develops between them. However, one day, the execution order is finally handed down.

Realizing that his fate is over, soldier Jody entrusts Fergus with one final wish. ``After I die, I would like to find my beloved lover in London who will be waiting for my return, and please support me.''

Director Neil Jordan apparently wrote the script to this point and was unable to write anything beyond that point.

After Jody's death, how will the two meet in London and what kind of relationship will they build? No matter how many times I rewrite it, my writing always stops at this part and I get stuck. Feeling that if he continued to write, he would not be able to make his point clear, he decided to put down his pen.

That's how I first shot `` Wolf Blood '' (1984) and `` Mona Lisa '' (1986), and when I felt fresh and started writing again, the sun finally shone on me. Suddenly, an idea for a ``core development'' occurred to him, and the clouds that had been covering his eyes suddenly cleared up.
