A history of competitive production

Movie planning can sometimes be a battle. It happens that different films depicting the same or similar subjects are produced at the same time.

For example, in 1988. Two films based on Pierre Choderlot de Laclos' novel `` Dangerous Liaisons '' have been in competition. The first film is `` Dangerous Liaisons '' (1988), directed by Stephen Frears. At the 61st Academy Awards, it was nominated in seven categories, including Best Picture, and received high praise, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Design, and Best Costume Design. The other film is Milos Forman's `` Laws of Love '' (1989). The release date of this film was pushed back by one year due to the release and high acclaim of ``Dangerous Liaisons''. What is a coincidence is that ``Koi no Yoku'' was also nominated for Best Costume Design at the 62nd Academy Awards. Although this film did not win any awards, both "American films" depicting 18th century Paris received high praise due to the adjusted release dates.

There are too many examples of this.In 1998, `` Deep Impact '' (1998), which depicts the panic of a comet colliding with the Earth, was released in May as `` Armageddon '', which depicts the panic of a meteorite colliding with the Earth. ” (1998) was released in North America in July. Also in Japan, Kadokawa Pictures' ` `Hayabusa BACK TO THE EARTH '' (11), 20th Century Fox's ``HAYABUSA'' (11), and Toei's ` `Hayabusa Haruka '', all based on the achievements of the asteroid explorer ``Hayabusa'', have been produced in Japan. In one case, four films were produced in quick succession from 2011 to 2012, including ``Naru Kaikaku '' (2012) and Shochiku's ` `Okaeri, Hayabusa '' (12).

"Armageddon" preview

Although each of them is a completely different work drawn from a different perspective, the later the releases of works with the same subject matter, the more likely the audience will be disappointed, and naturally they will not perform well at the box office. It has the aspect of being disadvantageous. In this respect, the case of ``Armageddon,'' which earned nearly twice as much box office revenue as ``Deep Impact'' in both the Japanese and American markets, can be said to be unique.

Regarding commercial risk, two companies that were planning to adapt different novels into films, Warner Bros.' ``THE TOWER'' and 20th Century Fox's `` THE GLASS INFERNO, '' about a skyscraper fire, are competing with each other. An eloquent example is `` The Towering Inferno '' (1974), which was a collaboration between the two.

In fact, ``Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves'' (1991), starring Kevin Costner, was also a competitive film with multiple projects launched at the same time.
