Eastwood is not an action movie

91-year-old master Clint Eastwood is looking forward to the release of his new film ` `Cry Macho '' (21), which is his 40th film as a director and also plays the lead role. He has been a popular actor at the forefront of Hollywood for more than half a century, and has won two Academy Awards as a director during his 50-year career. Of all his filmography, ``Honkytonk Man'' (1982) may have received the most unfavorable treatment.

Eastwood directed, produced, and starred in this 1982 film. The production was led by Malpaso Productions, which he founded in 1967 and has produced nearly all of his productions since then. Eastwood, who fell in love with the original novel by Clancy Carlyle, asked Carlyle himself to write the script, and shot it all at once in a low-budget style. Although it was an ambitious work, at the time it recorded the lowest box office revenue in the United States for a film in which he was both director and star.

"Honkytonk Man" preview

The main reason for this was that the impression of the work itself was plain. At the time, Eastwood was an out-and-out action star, and in the same year, he made a big hit with the military sky-action movie Firefox (1982), in which he both directed and starred. Since he was playing the role of a sickly drunk country singer, it was natural for the audience to be confused. The Japanese distribution company Warner Bros. was also very perplexed, and the movie was first released as a splash movie, a blockbuster movie, only in regions where double-feature screenings of new releases were the norm at the time, and audiences in Tokyo had to wait for the movie to be screened at Meigaza Theater. There wasn't.

Today, Eastwood's works are an unwavering brand, even if they are not action films. In that sense, it can be said that the film came too soon. Taking the opportunity of the new release, let's explore the appeal of this work once again.
