brutally honest

"Have you ever had your dreams and reality confused? Even though you had money, you shoplifted. You felt depressed. Reality and reality were out of sync. Was I abnormal? Was it because of the 1960s? It was just a common boring thing. Zuki?”

``Girl, Interrupted'' (1999) begins with a shot of a window showing the outside world. In what appears to be an abandoned cabin, Susanna (Winona Ryder) and Lisa (Angelina Jolie) huddle together as if to protect them from the outside world. Lisa is in tears on Susannah's lap. Polly (Elisabeth Moss), who has a large burn scar on her face, is shouting something, but her voice cannot be heard. Georgina (Claire Duvall) picks up a syringe from the broken glass on the floor. Their voiceless, heartbreaking cries. Everything outside the window is a lie. A girl who has been interrupted (original title: ``Girl, Interrupted'').

``When I was 21 years old, I read the book `` Girls in the Adolescent Ward '' and fell in love with it. I've never read a book that was so brutally honest. Moreover, it is a very humorous work. The characters were so charming that it almost broke my heart.'' (Winona Ryder)*1

Susanna Kaysen was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after only 15 to 20 minutes of diagnosis. `` Girls in the Adolescent Ward '' depicts life in a psychiatric hospital for two years. Winona Ryder was so moved by this brutally honest memoir that she volunteered to be the film's producer. Like Susannah Kaysen, she had been hospitalized in a mental hospital as a teenager, so making this film was like confronting the shadow of her own teenage years. It may have been a self-harming experience, just like the characters in this movie. As if following the opening narration, she herself ends up committing the crime of theft at the peak of her career.

For Winona Ryder, `` Girls in the Adolescent Ward '' was a book she wished she had discovered when she was a teenager. Winona Ryder self-portrait by Winona Ryder. It is clear from watching this film, which is portrayed with brutal honesty, that the role of Susanna was a fateful encounter for her. Winona Ryder recalls her experience in a psychiatric hospital:

“I think everyone can say that 19 is a tough age.” (Winona Ryder)*1
