James Mangold praised Winona Ryder in this film, calling her a ``silent movie actress.'' He is an actor who can reveal things just by the movement of his eyes. James Mangold's feature-length debut, `` I Want to Meet You '' (1995), which impressed Winona Ryder, also features a protagonist who has a complex about being overweight and is devoted to a woman (Liv Tyler). This is a work that conveys your feelings through your eyes. And Winona Ryder in Very Short somehow reminds me of Jean Seberg in Bonjour Tristesse (58). The fact that Jean Seberg also starred in the terrifying masterpiece `` Lilith '' (64), which is set in a mental hospital, gives this film a depth of film historical imagery.

In ``The Girl, Interrupted,'' the movements of the characters' gazes are precisely designed. Susanna's gaze as an observer. Lisa's gaze as a ruler. The movement of their gaze creates not only a physical relationship but also a sense of emotional distance.

Patients run innocently down the hallway in chairs with casters. Life in the facility is edited in an overlapping manner, like unrolling a scroll. This scene, which shows the passage of time, was reportedly shot during a break in filming. James Mangold says that rather than rehearsing, he pays more attention to getting the actors familiar with the space on set. For example, have them know where rubber bands and paper clips are located in the room. He also tries to keep the framing open so that the actors can take full advantage of the props and space. Angelina Jolie was given a glove-shaped stuffed animal as a prop, and she makes use of it in a gesture that gives the impression of omnipotence by a ruler. James Mangold said he was often surprised by Angelina Jolie's ideas.

“Angelina Jolie was in a wheelchair, walking up and down the hallways, trying to figure out how to live her life in this movie.” I think it's very important to get used to being in control.'' (James Mangold)*3

During the filming of the film, Angelina Jolie avoided communication with Winona Ryder as much as possible. It is said that the intention was to create a sense of distance between Susanna and Lisa.
