Encounter with Lisa, the Witch of the West

Director James Mangold was moved by Winona Ryder's passion and began rewriting the script she had brought to him. It is said that he decided on the direction the script should take while consulting with her. Victor Fleming's `` The Wizard of Oz '' (1939) was used as a reference for the rewrite. Dorothy, the main character in `` The Wizard of Oz ,'' is a young girl who is unsure of her identity and is insecure. A journey of mysterious encounters and self-discovery along the "yellow brick road." However, like Susanna, Dorothy also begins to desire to return to her ``home''. The role of Lisa, played charismatically by Angelina Jolie, was based on the Witch of the West, who threatens Dorothy.

It is said that many actors were interested in the role of Lisa, who charms Susanna. Courtney Love was among them. Courtney Love gives a great performance in ` `Larry Flynt '' (1996), directed by Milos Forman, who is also James Mangold's mentor. However, the overwhelming presence of Angelina Jolie, who came to audition, decided everything. The production team saw the recorded footage of the audition and immediately decided that there was no one else to play Lisa. Angelina Jolie plays Lisa, who seems to be in control of everything in the room. That sadly innocent gesture. She discovers the Lisa within herself. The role of Lisa would earn her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

"It was a slice of my life, a role that made me want to reach out to others, to feel alive, to be free. And it was my own persona." (Angelina)・Jolie) *2

Like the Witch of the West, Lisa violently closes the gap with Susanna. Susannah feels threatened by Lisa, but at the same time is fascinated by her honesty. Susanna may be projecting her admiration onto Lisa. Lisa has a brutal honesty that Susanna cannot express. In this scene, nurse leader Valerie (Whoopi Goldberg) heads to an ice cream shop with her patients. Here, Susanna encounters the wife of the man with whom she had an affair. When a woman approaches Susannah with malicious intent, Lisa launches a humorous attack. Although she is vicious, Lisa cares for her friends. The patient's fellow patients all imitate dog barking to scare the woman away. This is also an act of provocation to those who view them in a discriminatory manner. They play the caricature of the "madman" that everyone wants them to be.

Lisa's provocative words and behavior represented Susannah's inner voice. In this scene, Lisa and the others are proven to be much more "decent." And Angelina Jolie interpreted Lisa as a truly "decent" character in this movie.
