“The Medium” Directly to Inferno, a roller coaster of fear that continues to accelerate

“Unpleasant settings” that support fear
Still, it's a movie full of strange energy. The entire film is made up of images that closely follow Nim and her family, who are descended from shamans, and the reality is so real that you might wonder if they actually exist. The scenery of the village is sometimes beautiful and sometimes frightening, and the handheld camera creates a realistic feeling of being there. The atmosphere of a closed community seems to cling to the viewer. Meanwhile, the highlight of the film's early stages is the frightening sight of the strange things approaching little by little.
What forms the basis of the story and supports its horror are the precisely drawn human relationships. In the first place, if we go back in time, it was the older sister Noi, not the younger sister Nim, who was first chosen by the goddess Bayan as a shaman. However, when the young Noi refused to inherit, the power was transferred to Nim. The awkward atmosphere between the two is probably due in part to the fact that Nim sacrificed his life, but Noi still doesn't trust him completely. Noi believes that her idea is correct and doesn't even like Nim's attempts to examine Min without permission.
Nim and Noi also have an older brother named Mani. Mani has a young wife, Pan, and the two have just had a child. Maybe that's why Mani is worried about Min's changes, but there's a sense of distance between them that doesn't get too involved in the relationship between the sisters. Nim's husband, Willow, who died of an illness, continues to have mysterious misfortunes in her family. Willow's father commits suicide in prison after poor factory management, and her grandfather dies after being stoned by a worker. The son he had with Noi, Min's older brother Mac, also died in an accident at a young age.

The mere fact that the daughter is possessed by something is frightening, but relationships between people and the atmosphere in the village complicate the situation. These unpleasant settings, including motifs such as shamans and rituals, can be found in the Higa Sisters series, which begins with Ichi Sawamura's `` Bogiwanga Comes '' (Kadokawa Horror Bunko), and in the film adaptation of the same work, directed by Tetsuya Nakajima `` Kuru ''. ” (18). As an Asian horror story, there are many things that Japanese audiences will find easy to understand.
According to an interview with director and screenwriter Banjeong Pisantanakoon, about 70% of the story of this film is faithful to Na Hong-jin's original idea. Speaking of Na Hong-jin's works, not only `` Gokseong '' but also `` The Chaser '' (2008) and `` Sad Beast '' (2010) have incorporated deep character depictions into thrillers and violence. This taste is also "inherited" in "The Medium", which was directed by a different director.
