“An Impudent Girl” synopsis

Paris in the summer. In contrast to the people who are excited about vacation, 13-year-old Charlotte is somehow depressed. She doesn't even know why, and ends up having trouble with her rugged and stubborn father, her foul-mouthed brother, and the maid who acts as her mother. One day, when Charlotte is about to go to class, she hears a beautiful piano melody. When I looked into the music room, I saw a girl, Clara, who was the same age as me. Charlotte feels nothing like admiration or jealousy towards Clara, who has a genius piano talent, and her heart is disturbed...

The dazzling summer of my 13th year

"When I saw Charlotte, it was obvious. I rushed to Jane Birkin's house and asked her to let me meet her." (Claude Miller)*1

A dazzling summer when I was 13 years old. Pool classes at local schools. Charlotte (Charlotte Gainsbourg) gingerly climbs the diving board ladder. Perspective shot overlooking the pool. The surface of the pool seen from the diving board was reflecting the summer light in a cruel manner, and the light was too bright for Charlotte. Charlotte's male classmates say mean things to Charlotte, who is too scared to jump in.

Fear and humiliation. The core that forms the image of the girl in Claude Miller's ``An Impudent Girl'' (1985) is condensed in this first scene. Charlotte, who slightly injured her knee while jumping into the pool, crouches alone in the changing room. A naked female teacher suddenly appears. The scene presents a stark contrast between the adult female body and Charlotte's still-developing body.

Charlotte in ``An Impudent Girl'' is a girl, not a young girl. She is far from the Lolita fantasy portrayed by male artists. A girl who looks like a boy. Or perhaps he has an androgynous nature that is neither of those things. If the filming of this film had been delayed even one more year, the significance of this film would have changed dramatically. In " The Little Thief " (1988), filmed three years later, Charlotte Gainsbourg transitions to the body of an adolescent girl.

"Zanbi" (1984) in which she played a boyish daughter who talks back to her mother, played by Catherine Deneuve. Claude Miller's wife, Annie Miller, saw this work and urged her husband to meet Charlotte Gainsbourg as soon as possible. The screenplay for ``Charlotte,'' which was inspired by Carson McCullers' novel ` `The Wedding Party, '' was almost complete. Charlotte Gainsbourg reading with Jane Birkin. Her silent answer was, "If mom and dad are okay with it..." *1
