Don't go, Charlotte!

His works ``An Impudent Girl'' and `` The Little Thief '' with Charlotte Gainsbourg, and `` The Accompanist '' (1992) with Romane Bolinger have a similar feel to Claude Miller's ``Girls Trilogy.'' `` The Little Thief '', which was inherited from Truffaut's posthumous manuscript, tells the story of Jeanine, a shoplifting girl who was omitted from the screenplay for ` `The 400 Blows '' (1959). It can be said to be a road movie about Charlotte as she transitions into adolescence. `` The Accompanist ,'' who goes on a concert tour with an opera singer, feels like a possible sequel to ``An Impudent Girl.'' The shy heroine's low self-esteem, her rebellious spirit, and her repeated encounters that don't lead to love are all very reminiscent of the girl in ``An Impudent Girl.''

“An Impudent Girl” preview

``An Impudent Girl'' includes an episode that is less than a love affair with a young lathe worker, but for Charlotte, who lives in a world of ``longing,'' love cannot be said to be of interest. In order to get closer to Clara, Charlotte meets a young man, lies about her age, and pretends to be in love with him. When a young man tries to pursue a true love affair, Charlotte immediately rejects him. What is important for Charlotte is to accompany Clara in her glamorous world and to pretend to be an adult in front of the young man. The scene in which Charlotte pokes her head out of the second-story window and converses with the young man who has come to the front of her house is full of richness. A conversation between two people in a classical relationship similar to " Romeo and Juliet ." Charlotte, who lies about her age and pretends to be an adult woman, slightly flips her hair in an unfamiliar gesture. Its clumsiness is beautiful. Charlotte, who lost her mother at a young age, had no adult female role models.

The scene where Charlotte wears the red dress for Clara's concert is cruelly beautiful. Charlotte listens to Clara's beautiful piano melody from a remote balcony. Clara is far out of reach for Charlotte. At Clara's mansion, Charlotte discovers another world and how painfully far it is. The dress appears once again in this work. Leonie, the housekeeper, gives Charlotte a dress that she once wore as a girl. Charlotte, wearing Leonie's dress, heads to Clara's concert with Leonie and Lulu.

When a girl wears a dress in ``An Impudent Girl'', she is wearing a ``longing'' that will pass away. Lulu, my little best friend, screams outside the concert venue. Just as Charlotte likes Clara, Lulu also has a fondness for Charlotte that resembles admiration. Lulu loves the scent of the perfume Charlotte wears called ``Blue Moon.'' Lulu admires Charlotte as she is now. Lulu's desperate cry, ``Don't go, Charlotte!'' resonates with our own cries for the ``longing'' that is about to pass. Good as it is. Don't go, Charlotte. Charlotte forever.
