A song born from failure

"What does happiness really mean? Happiness is just a fabrication made up by advertisements."

A set modeled after the shopping mall "Galerie Toison d'Or" in Brussels. From preparations for opening to closing, women are involved in routine work as employees of boutiques and beauty salons. The women, wearing colorful costumes, have slender bodies like the Mannequin lined up in shopping windows. These girls look like they belong in the world of advertising.

The shopping mall where the women work is underground. The employees talk a lot about their co-workers Mado and Lili's love affairs, but some are dreaming of being taken away overseas by unknown lovers, and others are living their lives distancing themselves from love. Women imprisoned underground. However, what these women are wary of is the image of ``happiness'' created by advertising. There is a sense that they form a small community among themselves.

Delphine Seyrig plays the lovable boss of the women. Jeanne has the same name as the main character of `` Jeanne Dielman '', who lived in the routine of housework. She is already married and has a son, and has an unforgettable lover. Young love and old love. ``Golden Eighties'' is also a film that asks whether age has anything to do with passion, and whether love grows old. As in `` Jeanne Dielman '', Chantal Akerman sketches the transition in which a break is created in a routine. In this work, love that has passed, or love that is about to pass, creates rifts. “Song” is overflowing from the knots of frayed threads.
