British horror film that inspired the idea
The story of ``The Fog'' was born out of the fear that Carpenter suddenly felt at Stonehenge in the fog while traveling in southern England. Could something terrible come out of this fog? What would happen if a ghost or Monster appeared? In this way, Carpenter envisions a ghost story set in a fictional town.
British director Quentin Lawrence's science fiction horror film The Trollenberg Terror (58, not yet released in Japan) was also one of the inspirations. A man's head was chopped off while climbing Mt. Trollenberg in Switzerland, and United Nations investigators said the incident was similar to what happened three years ago in the Andes. I realize that. As soon as the mountain was covered with mysterious clouds, the people on the mountain were brutally murdered one after another. Right now, Mt. Trollenberg was covered in eerie clouds.

In this movie, a giant Monster emerges from the clouds with one eye and legs like an octopus. Unlike ``The Fog'', there is no depiction of a dark, shadowy ghost emerging from a glowing, eerie fog, and it is a monster movie that is close to the worldview of `` The Mist .'' Moreover, the Monster's shape is not very elaborate, and I think the first half, where the Monster does not appear, is more successful as a horror movie. However, the depiction of a man in a mountain hut who notices an ominous cloud approaching and hastily closes the door, and how the cloud (mist) slowly creeps through the gap in the door, is said to have been quoted verbatim by Carpenter. It's okay to say it. Also, the fact that the investigators escape to the observatory on top of the mountain and barricade themselves at the end must have had an influence on the situation in The Fog, where the radio station is inside a lighthouse.
