Evolution brought to Spielberg

Jurassic Park not only marked a new direction for the portrayal of dinosaurs, but also marked an evolution for its director, Steven Spielberg himself.

Spielberg has been producing hit after hit since 1975's Jaws , and is often thought to have had a stable career as a film director. However, around the 1990s, when he was waiting for the birth of Ready Player One , his career was in a state of confusion. He repeatedly tried and failed with socially conscious works such as The Color Purple (1985) and Empire of the Sun (1987) and entertainment works such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and his The Birds slowed down. Then, in 1991, he showed a stumble that made people suspect that his talent had dried up at a young age with the fantasy masterpiece Hook .

"Ready Player One" Trailer

Hook, a spin-off of Peter Pan that embodied the "childish" public image of Spielberg's work, was a lavish event movie with a huge budget, a star-studded cast, and a gigantic studio set. However, the production cost of the original $50 million was nearly $30 million more, and the shooting period exceeded the filming period by 40 days, revealing poor cost-performance for Spielberg, who believes in fast filming. Although the finished film was a hit, it received poor reviews from critics, such as the famous Richard Schickel, who called it "a lavish but miscalculated bizarre film," and Newsweek magazine, who called it "a party cake with too much powdered sugar."

Jurassic Park surprised the whole world, as if to brush aside the negative reviews of Hook, and became an unprecedented hit. It brought Spielberg back to the top of Hollywood's director ranks. The film grossed about $1 billion at the box office worldwide, and it remains the No. 1 film in Spielberg's history. Furthermore, Schindler's List a first-class filmmaker in both name and reality.

Above all, many movie fans felt that Spielberg had made a comeback with the thrilling horror scenes, reminiscent of his breakthrough works "Jaws" and " Close Encounters of the Third Kind of the Third Kind" (1977) (more on these horror scenes in the next chapter).
