From “Diva” to “Betty Blue.” Jean-Jacques Benex's talent will be missed in the future

The single-minded love between a man and a woman becomes Benex's masterpiece.

`` Diva '' and ``Betty Blue'' have a lot in common. It is a single-minded, honest love from a man to a woman. Diva , the main character of "Divas," has a stalker-like love for popular opera singer Cynthia Hawkins, including stealing her dress in her dressing room. However, his feelings are so pure that Cynthia accepts him, and eventually he becomes a ``guide'' who helps Cynthia realize her true talent. A form of dedicated love existed there.

And in ``Betty Blue'', Zorg is the one who continues to love Betty even though he is being swayed by the overly free-spirited Betty. Betty has no common sense or morals when it comes to her instinctive actions, such as pouring paint on her co-worker's car and setting her house on fire. A normal man would find this charming. Here again, the love between a man and a woman is depicted as if it cannot be explained by logic. In ``Betty Blue,'' Betty falls in love with a novel written by Zorg and relentlessly sells it to a publisher, but this pattern is the opposite of `` Diva ,'' and it leads to a woman drawing out the talent of a man.

Love stories in movies tend to be centered around women, and are told from a woman's perspective. This may be due to the fact that many women prefer love stories as a movie genre, but Jean-Jacques Benex's two masterpieces, `` Diva '' and ``Betty Blue,'' depict the love between a man and a woman. It happened. At first glance, ``Betty Blue'' seems to be a female-centered story, but as I mentioned in the previous article, the director's cut version (`` Integral '') has a male-centered story.

In addition to the impact of Béatrice Dalle, who played the role of Betty in her film debut, the fact that she was able to express the love between a man and a woman so well was due to Jean-Hugues Anglade's soft, delicate, modest yet sure performance. This is largely due to its characteristic of giving a sense of inclusiveness.
