The aim is to make the story closer to the original novel

" The Thing " is a remake of " The Thing " (51) directed by Howard Hawks, but it is closer to the original novel " The Thing ". Hawks' "The Thing" interpreted the aliens as human-shaped Monster like Frankestein, but Carpenter's "The Thing" is more faithful to the original, depicting them as "objects (living things)" that can assimilate with humans on a cellular level. By emphasizing the monster's ability to assimilate with others and impersonate them, the theme Carpenter wanted to express was "distrust of others".

In the DVD audio commentary, Carpenter says of the following dialogue, "It's my favorite line."

Blair: "I can't trust anyone anymore"

MacCready: "Everyone is suspicious."

The 12 men trapped in the Antarctic base are seized by the suspicion that one of them has already been assimilated into Thing X, and they fall into suspicion. This "suspect" is the main theme of "The Thing" and the door to what Carpenter thinks is "the end of the world." In order to fully depict this theme, Carpenter completely isolated the characters.

“Object X from the Planet” (c) 1982 UNIVERSAL CITY STUDIOS, INC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

First, in The Thing (1951), the setting was changed from Alaska to Antarctica as in the original novel, and the characters were confined to a base on a continent completely isolated from the civilized world. In other words, the characters are doubly confined in the "Antarctic continent" and the "base," and are furthermore in a state of suspicion that anyone other than themselves could have been assimilated into Thing X, resulting in a triple isolation. Completely isolated and secluded, the characters fall into a constant state of tension and conflict, and even those who are not assimilated into Thing X lose their lives.
